As the year winds down, the Google Zeitgeist reveals the top searches for 2010. Google Zeitgeist always provides a fascinating insight into the consciousness of the nation and what’s been on Kiwi’s radars over the past 12 months.In our 2010 lists, the Christchurch earthquake and Pike River mining disaster led the way in the top ten rising news searches while other popular searches included ‘Chile’, ‘Commonwealth Games’, ‘Oil Spill’ and ‘Hobbit’.The top ten most searched-for New Zealanders courted controversy in 2010, with Allan Hubbard, Director of South Canterbury Finance taking out top spot followed by former Labour MP Chris Carter.But it was former TVNZ Breakfast host Paul Henry who made the most impact, appearing in multiple lists including the fastest rising news category, as well as appearing in the top ten fastest rising New Zealanders list.Ironically, Sheila Dikshit – the subject of Henry’s much-publicised gaffe - also appeared in a list of fastest rising people searched for by New Zealanders ahead of Henry.Coming third in the list of fastest rising movie searches was the award-winning Kiwi film, Boy. An awesome feat considering the only movies ahead of it were the big-budget thriller, Inception and Sci-Fi action flick, Resident Evil – Afterlife.In the sporting arena, the All Whites’ success in South Africa won them a spot on the list of the fastest rising news searches, only to be beaten by the All Blacks in the ‘hot tickets’ stakes.See below for some more interesting ‘top searches’ or to see top international searches and put together your own lists, check out our Zeitgeist page www.google.com/zeitgeist.
